One(ce) in a Lifetime

I wanted to reflect on a Lauryn Hill lyric, what MLKjr day means for me and all these things crossing my mind… well this is what came out of my head. It is at the point of realization that the journey begins and the distance may be shortened by persistence. Never surrender; nevertheless, do enjoy the ride.

there is no color that
separates us — my soul,
your soul. the degree is
in our sins, our mistakes:
each one, spirit contained
(and though I’ve lied before
doesn’t mean I won’t change–
mend my ways),
mirror the lightness whose
Being clarifies all my emotional
allergies– this strange
attachment to kindness
when in my mind, perfection
in thought is a work in
progress– as I am, as
we are– truthseekers,
God-lovers, supreme dwellers
with avatar aspirations.
At once, humbled am I
seeing how many miles,
miles more (lifetime more
perhaps) there is to walk
